About Ilima S. Morris

Ilima loves teaching children! She was raised in a tribe, surrounded by elders and given many wisdom activations as a child. She has always known she was meant to teach and has devoted her life to creating "out of the box" curriculum for the children who are tuned-in and very creative.

Her lifelong education extends far beyond the traditional classroom. From an early age, Ilima immersed herself in the disciplines of dance, gymnastics, cultural studies, creative movement, and the performing arts. She trained extensively in classical ballet and was honored to perform with the American Folk Ballet, where she developed discipline, artistry, and a deep appreciation for the power of movement as a form of storytelling and expression.

Ilima also received her foundational gymnastics training through San Diego Gymnastics, where she cultivated strength, balance, coordination, perseverance, and confidence qualities she now thoughtfully incorporates into her teaching philosophy. Her dedication to holistic wellness led her to study Hatha Yoga, completing coursework that deepened her understanding of mindful movement, breathwork, body awareness, and the connection between physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

As a Native Hawaiian through her father's lineage, Ilima has maintained a lifelong connection to her cultural heritage. She began studying hula at the age of three under the guidance of Kumu Penny Evans in San Diego, and later with Puna Dawson in Kauai, where she learned that hula is far more than dance, it is a living tradition that preserves history, language, values, genealogy, and aloha. These early cultural teachings continue to inspire her work with children and her commitment to honoring identity, respect, and community.

These experiences, combined with years of continued learning, artistic practice, educational leadership, and child development, have shaped Ilima's unique approach to education. She believes that movement, creativity, cultural connection, nature, and self-expression are essential elements of a child's healthy development and lifelong love of learning.

Ilima is naturally gifted in facilitating the development of alliances between old man academia and the new paradigm of creative wisdom seekers. She is a guardian of the culture that honors a child's evolution through the exploration and expansion of their innate curriculum, their connection to higher consciousness, and their heart-centered awareness.

Ilima continues to craft a rich, expansive curriculum where project-based learning, holistic movement, dance, creative expression, cultural enrichment, a deep love of nature, and joyful well-being come together to inspire every child. Her vision is to nurture confident, compassionate, curious learners who are empowered to discover their unique gifts while developing the academic, creative, physical, emotional, and spiritual foundations needed to thrive throughout life.

Meet Our Director 

Ilima is an accomplished educator, artist, and educational leader with more than 22 years of experience serving children and families throughout Kauaʻi. She holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) with an emphasis in Dance, a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), and earned a Social Work license with an emphasis in Child Development from the University of Utah. Her diverse educational background combines creative excellence, child development expertise, and strong organizational and leadership skills, providing a well-rounded foundation for supporting the academic, social, emotional, and creative growth of every child.  

As the founder and principal of Kauaʻi Creative Academy, Ilima has devoted her career to creating a wholistic learning environment where every child is encouraged to grow academically, socially, emotionally, and creatively. Her educational philosophy blends rigorous academics with the arts, helping students develop confidence, critical thinking skills, compassion, and a genuine love of learning.

Throughout her career, Ilima has served students across the island at Kīlauea Elementary School, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, and Kapaʻa High School, gaining valuable experience working with diverse learners at every stage of development. Her commitment to children's well-being also led to her appointment by the State of Hawaiʻi as the Kauaʻi Island Child Advocate, where she collaborated with families, educators, and community agencies to develop meaningful educational plans and advocate for student success.

Ilima continues to pursue professional growth through educational leadership, curriculum development, creative arts education, and child-centered learning practices. Her dedication to excellence has earned the trust and respect of families, colleagues, and the wider Kauaʻi community.

Above all, Ilima believes every child possesses unique gifts and unlimited potential. She is passionate about helping students discover their strengths, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning within a safe, supportive, and aloha-centered environment where every child feels seen, valued, and empowered to succeed.
